One of the most unique features of our practice is our emphasis on the diagnosis and treatment of TMJ (jaw joint) disorders, facial pain, and headaches. Our ability to manage the TMJ and muscle pain has led to a referral-based clinic for patients from all over Central Ontario.
What Is TMD?
In our practice, TMD stands for Trigeminally Mediated Disorders. The trigeminal nerve is the main sensory nerve of the face, including the TMJ, the jaw muscles, the sinuses, and the teeth. All pain from the face is transmitted to the brain via the trigeminal nerve. Determining the cause of the pain is paramount. Sometimes one of the structures has been injured, but this is not always the case. Patients may have one or more of the following:
- Headaches (either Tension or Migraines)
- Muscle pain or tired, aching muscles
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Tooth wear or sensitivity
- Joint pain and/or noises (clicking, popping or grinding)
